Derrydonnell Hurling Centenary 2011

Keane children playing hurling in the fields – he always had a critical eye and would often advise on the little tricks of hurling. Peter Heneghan worked hard on the farm at home in Heneghan’s. Kit Heneghan, sister in law, says he was a hardworking honest farmer. He had nice personality and was a quiet man. He didn’t work with the horses – he left that to his brother Séan – Kit’s husband. Dominic Parr was a nephew of his as his mother was a sister of Peter and Paddy. Dominic remembers his love of the matches. He was very interested in hurling and loved the sport. The first wireless in the parish was in Heneghan’s. Peter loved listening to the matches with some of the neighbours who used to come to visit to hear the matches as well. Several of the Heneghan’s went to the US. Seán and sisters Lena, Kate, Maggie and Delia lived at home or nearby. Mary was married in Co. Down to Dominic Parr’s father. Delia Heneghan married Mike Costello who was a brother of Jack and Martin Costello of Gortroe who were on the team. The Keane Brothers: Pat, Andy and Mick Keane of Tobberoe. Pat, Mick and Andy Keane lived in Tobberoe in 1911. Their father Patrick Keane featured on the 1901 Census but had passed away in 1903. His widow Norah Keane nee Kennedy, (mother of Pat, Mick and Andy), was aged 61 years in 1911. They were married in 1877 so they would have been married 34 years in 1911 if Patrick was still alive then. Norah died in 1926. Patt and Norah had eleven children – Patrick, Bridget, Margaret, Patrick, John, Andrew, Michael, Mary Anne, Martin, Nora and Thomas according to Athenry Church Records. There were two children by the name Patrick. The first must have died and the second went on to be the captain of the 1911 winning team. There was also another sister Elly which the Keane family know of, but she is not listed in the records – so it seems there were twelve children born altogether. John and Elly emigrated to the US. Mary Anne went to England. There were no other residents other than the Keane family in the townland of Tobberoe at the time of the 1911 Census. Of course their neighbours and friends, the Heneghans lived nearby in Derrydonnellmore. Pat Keane was the eldest of the three brothers on the team, being born 15/3/1885 aged 26 in 1911. Pat Keane married Honor or Nora Glavin from Canteeny in Turloughmore on the 26/4/1928. They had five children in all, 3 boys and two girls. He was a farmer and lived in Tobberroe all his life. His grandson, Seán Keane remembers him always reading or listening to the radio. He was a great storyteller. He loved going to the markets and fairs and getting the buyer and seller to agree a price. Seán is meant to have a similar personality to him – similar wit and humour. Dominic Parr remembers the Christmas card games at Pat Keane’s every year before 25
